February 16Global Action for Tasmanian Forests and the Observertree

The Last Stand and some lovely folk from across the country were very happy to show solidarity with Miranda Gibson, and her brave work in the Observertree.  You can check the full slideshow of actions across the globe below - 70 ACTIONS across the globe – we did an action in Melbourne and Bells Beach in Victoria and supported a range of others.

Miranda has been living fulltime in a tree platform 60 metres in the air for 60 days in one of the forest areas originally promised protection, and now slated to be logged in Tasmania.

Miranda was so busy doing rocking media all day she couldn’t talk to us for very long but we managed a quick skype chat at Flinders St Station  – so everyone could send her love… in fact she is in our group photo on the laptop on skype!  We are also putting some video messages together to send her.

We see the the Observertree project as playing a unique role in bringing the ongoing plight of Tasmania’s forests to homes and communities across Australia and the world.  Miranda’s bravery and commitment in drawing attention to the forest that is to be destroyed for the Ta Ann is inspirational.

And speaking of Ta Ann,  the campaign we launched highlighting their practices, with  Markets for Change and the Huon Valley Environment Centre last week has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons.  It has received broad national coverage over the last week.  Check the Oz, and also ABC national radio.  All number of state and federal MP’s – even the Prime Minister, have come out against the campaign batting for industry. You can check the website to see what all the fuss is about and most importantly TAKE ACTION.

Here is a quote from Miranda: “It is an international disgrace that the Australian government promised the protection of these forests six months ago now. Yet due to the Ta Ann’s insatiable appitate for native forests, logging has actually increased in the areas that are ear-marked for forest reserves” said Miranda Gibson.

“Today’s action sends a clear message to Ta Ann and their corporate customers, that the international community will not tolerate the destruction of these globally significant forests”, she concluded.
